This page explains how the RARE platform helps you capture, analyze, and manage lateral flow assay results efficiently and compliantly. You’ll learn what tools are available, who uses them, and how RARE supports your scientific and quality workflows.

What is the Rapid Assay Result Ecosystem (RARE)?

The Rapid Assay Result Ecosystem (RARE) is a cloud-based platform for capturing, analysing, and managing lateral flow assay results. It combines a validated mobile reader app with a configurable web portal to support high‑integrity data capture, configuration management, reprocessing, and diagnostic reporting.

RARE consists of two tightly integrated components:

Mobile App

Acts as a laboratory‑grade analyzer running on a smartphone.

  • Uses the camera to:

    • Capture images of lateral flow assays.

    • Check image quality (orientation, presence of cassette, lighting) and reject unsuitable images.

    • Extract quantitative signal metrics from the test and control lines.

  • Applies configuration settings delivered from the web portal so the correct reader and housing settings are always used for each assay.

  • Securely uploads results and associated metadata to the RARE backend for storage, review, reprocessing, and reporting.

Web Portal

Your command center for configuration, data management, and analysis. Set up custom methods, manage users and organizations, review uploaded results, and generate reports—all in one place.

Provides a browser‑based interface for managing organisations, users, and assay configurations, and for reviewing results.

Key capabilities include:

  • Account & Access Management

    • Creation and management of organisations and users.

    • Role‑based access (for example: Admin, Organisation Admin, Standard User), with each organisation’s data kept separate.

  • Configuration Management

    • Central management of:

      • Housings (how tests are presented to the camera).

      • Methods (reader and analysis settings used by the mobile app).

      • Batch Configurations for quantitative assays (calibration datasets and curve‑fitting models such as linear, 4‑parameter and 5‑parameter logistic).

      • Classifier Configurations and interpreter settings for qualitative or semi‑quantitative result interpretation.

  • Result Capture, Storage, and Reprocessing

    • Secure storage and listing of results uploaded by the mobile app, with search and filtering.

    • Creation of datasets (collections of results) for downstream analysis.

    • Reprocessing workflows that generate new results from existing datasets using updated methods, batch configurations, or classifier configurations, while preserving full lineage so you can always trace how each result was produced.

    • Detailed result views

  • Ground Truth and Performance Evaluation

    • Assignment and management of ground truth at test‑line level

    • Use of ground truth across analysis, exports, and diagnostic reports.

    • Generation of diagnostic and analytical performance summaries

    • Export of reports for documentation and regulatory review.

  • Security, Audit, and Documentation

    • Central audit logging of key security and administrative events.

    • Role‑ and organisation‑based access control enforced in both the user interface and underlying APIs.

Together, the mobile app and web portal form a single ecosystem that:

  • Captures assay data using a validated virtual reader on commodity smartphones.

  • Centralises assay configurations to ensure consistent and correct settings across devices and studies.

  • Supports large‑scale data collection, reprocessing, and robust ground truth management for assay development, optimisation and validation.

  • Provides analytical and diagnostic reporting to support regulatory submissions and ongoing performance monitoring.

  • Enforces security, segregation of customer data, audit trails and controlled access.

Who is RARE For?

RARE is built for professionals involved in assay development, validation, and ongoing performance monitoring, including:

  • Development Scientists: Rapidly collect and analyse data from multiple assay configurations.

  • Optimisation Scientists: Reprocess and compare results using different settings to fine‑tune assay performance.

  • Validation Scientists: Gather robust datasets across devices and environments to support validation and regulatory submissions.

  • Quality Control Operators: Scan and record large batches of tests during manufacturing or release testing.

  • Product Owners & Regulatory Affairs: Monitor performance, ensure compliance, and gather evidence for continuous improvement.

If your work involves generating, interpreting, or reviewing lateral flow assay data, RARE is designed to support you.

How Does RARE Support Assay Development?

RARE supports every stage of assay development and lifecycle management:

  • Data Capture
Use the mobile app to quickly and accurately record assay results in the lab or field, with built‑in quality checks on each image.

  • Configuration Management
Use the web portal to define and manage housings, methods, batch configurations and classifier configurations for different assay types, ensuring consistent, controlled settings across studies and users.

  • Result Analysis & Reprocessing
Instantly view and filter results in the portal. Create datasets, reprocess data with updated configurations, and answer “what if” questions without rerunning physical tests.

  • Collaboration & Access Control
Manage organisations, users and roles so the right people can access the right data, with clear separation between different organisations’ results.

  • Compliance & Traceability
All key actions are logged, configurations are centrally managed, and result lineage (including reprocessed results) is preserved, supporting regulatory and quality requirements.
